IIT JAM Expert Analysis & Expected Cutoff

IIT JAM is a no doubt one of the toughest exam as it is conducted to check the eligibility of candidate for the masters’ degree from the IITs and IISc.

IIT JAM 2018 Paper Pattern:


IIT JAM 2018 paper pattern is given below:

Some Important points with respective to the IIT JAM exam:

The duration of the IIT JAM exam is 3 hours. The medium of the test paper is English.
The exam will be conducted in ONLINE mode.
All the 7-subject paper consist of 3 types of questions which have are divided into section such as A, B & C.

The three-different pattern of question are:

1.       Multiple choice Question(MCQ): The question has choices in which only one option is correct.
2.       Multiple selected Question(MSQ): The question is the same as MCQ but in this more than one answer choices are correct.
3.       Numerical Answer Type Question(NAT): For every question, the real value is the answer and you must give the answer by using virtual keyboard.

Marking Scheme of the IIT JAM Exam:


The paper pattern is divided into 3 parts their number of question and negative marking is given below:

·         Section A-  The section A consist of MCQ which has 30 questions carrying one or two marks each and the negative marking for 1 mark is 1/3 and for 2 it is 2/3 marks.

·         Section B - The Section B consist of MSQ which has 10 questions carrying two marks each and no negative marking is there for this section.

·         Section C – The section C consist of total 20 NAT question of one or two marks each and no negative marking as well.

·         The questions which are not attempted during exam will result in zero mark.

IIT JAM expected Marks:


For Biological sciences, the expected cutoff marks are:

General category – 32.50
OBC – 28.69
SC/ST – 15.60

For Bio Technology, the expected cutoff marks are:
General category – 35.40
OBC – 29.10
SC/ST – 17.35

For Chemistry, the expected cutoff marks are:
General category – 27.46
OBC –  24.30
SC/ST – 14

For Geology, the expected cutoff marks are:
General category – 41
OBC –  36.80
SC/ST – 21

For Mathematics, the expected cutoff marks are:
General category – 13
OBC –  12.50
SC/ST – 5

For Mathematical statistics, the expected cutoff marks are:
General category – 7
OBC –  5.70
SC/ST – 3

For Physics, the expected cutoff marks are:
General category – 14
OBC –  12
SC/ST – 7.50

The above mention is only predication of the expected cutoff, it is not the exact cutoff.
